A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
